283 accidents claim 25 lives

Sat, 04 September 2010

MUSCAT — Twenty-five people were killed and 679 others were injured in 283 traffic accidents during the first half of this month of Ramadhan, compared to 33 deaths and 358 injuries in 253 accidents during the same period last year, statistics showed. Usually, most of the traffic accidents that occur during the month of Ramadhan are attributed to over-speeding as many motorists drive fast before the Maghrib to be on time with their families for the Iftar and this leads to deadly and dangerous accidents.

During this month, motorists could be the subject of fatigue and tiredness due to the fact that they stay up late in the night, which negatively affects their concentration and ability of control of the vehicle. ROP suggests that motorists should take enough rest and stop driving when they are tired. Meanwhile, the Combat of Crime Department of the Directorate-General of Inquiries and Criminal Investigation of Royal Oman Police (ROP) received information that a person has stolen a Hino (Tipper) truck by means of misrepresentation from one of the companies with the aim of selling it outside the country.

After some inquiries and investigation, the culprit, who was aided by a worker of that company, was detained at Qarn Al Alam area in the Wusta Region and the case has been referred to the General Prosecution. In another development, the (ROP) Drug Fighting Department of the Directorate-General of Inquiries and Criminal Investigation was able, following successful efforts, to detain five drug traffickers and abusers who were in possession of 58 capsules of morphine and one-quarter of heroine in addition to some hashish and other drugs.

Another three persons were caught in the Wilayat of Al Aamirat with heroine in their possession. All the accused were referred to the General Prosecution for further investigation before bringing them before justice. Meantime, despite warnings issued by ROP, firing shotguns is still persistent during some occasions. Therefore, all should co-operate and refrain from this practise as it causes life and material losses when carried out in public places and during celebrations to express joy.

Particularly such usage of weapons and ammunition is prohibited by law. Misjudgement could harm those attending happy occasions or the person who is carrying the firearm. Also fires could cause damage to public and private utilities in case the fire hits a building, a power line or an electric post.
