SOCIETY -
By Nasra al Adawiya -
It might be strange to dwell about Mashakeek while here we are in the month of fasting. Mashakeek are BBQ, pieces of meat in skewers sizzled in charcoal fire.
The sight of men grilling Mashakeek for their families in Seeb beach road is an ordinary evening scene in the area.
Quite often you will find also temporary Mashakeek stalls of people who sell for those who don’t have time to BBQ by themselves.
The selling of Mashakeek has increased tremendously in Seeb area, it has extended on to other areas.
Stalls of Mashakeek are available to serve and fill the craving for those who love the taste of grilled meat.
Its astonishing to find all the time these stalls are crowded, you will seldom find Mashakeek stalls with no customers.
It’s interesting to know that some start as hobby to entrain families and friends, then it develops to an evening business beside their day profession.
Yet, there are others, who get encouraged by the sight of others in the trade and hope they can earn extra income.
The services differs from one stall to another, some even offer the service of ordering on phone to reduce the waiting time for their customers.
I’m compelled to say, one of the extra ordinary Mashakeek stories, is the sight of a dedicated elderly man.
I have seen him for months grilling and selling from lunchtime to noon in Al Hail and even the burning sun does not deter him in his Mashakeek business.
On a final note, where are the women in this? There are two women, daring enough to have a stall on the side road of Mawaleh selling diligently.
