Leadership

TO THE POINT -
By Deidre Harvey -
“What leaders do is inspire people, empower them. They pull rather than push. If you want to lead people, the first thing you have to do is get them to buy into shared objectives.” (Warren Bennis and Joan Goldsmith). If you can make people feel that they personally are an integral part of reaching the goals and objectives of the organisation that they agree with, then you are a leader.
Not all leaders have the same leadership styles, but they do have similar core values. People respect and trust leaders, not because they are leaders, but because they are worthy of this respect and trust. They lead by example and empower their people to be the best that they can be.
Leadership skills can be learnt and developed, but first you have to identify your specific leadership style so that you know where your strengths and weaknesses lie. Once you understand yourself, it will be easy to inspire and motivate the people around you who have the capacity to produce extraordinary results. Leadership is a relationship founded on trust and confidence. Without trust and confidence, people don’t take risks. Without risks, there’s no change. Without change, organisations die.
“It is only as we develop others that we permanently succeed.” (Harvey Samuel Firestone, 1868-1938)
